Chapter 6. There Was Never a Grade G (6)
Just as Bong Sua had been born into the life of an extra, Ki Woo-sol had been born into the life of a second male lead.
But this wasn't something she could just brush off with a simple "Oh, Ki Woo-sol is the second male lead!"
Because detailed information about Ki Woo-sol, the second male lead, had also entered her mind. The problem was that this detail went beyond imagination.
He was, incredibly—
'I'd never heard any rumors about this.'
A psychopath.
Not a psychopath in the sense of having a bad personality.
He had actually been diagnosed as a psychopath by a psychiatrist.
The reason the doctor had made that diagnosis could be explained in just two words.
"Murder..."
Ki Woo-sol had killed his father when he was young.
But he received no punishment. Because at the same time, he had become an S-rank Awakened.
The government had pulled strings to prevent the issue of a newly emerged high-rank Awakened being a murderer from becoming public.
Eventually, the case was buried in secrecy, becoming information known only to a select few at the top.
'Well, this is...'
Her heart trembled. She felt like she'd learned something she shouldn't know. This was practically a state secret.
Furthermore, because of this incident, Ki Woo-sol had entered the academy a year late while receiving psychiatric treatment.
'I thought he'd been trapped in a rift.'
It turned out he'd been trapped in a psychiatric ward, not a rift.
Just as Sua let out a small sigh—
BANG BANG!
"Hey! What's taking so long to change clothes! If you're not out in one minute, I'm coming in?!"
Baek Cheol-yeon, impatient as ever, shouted.
---
---
She'd lost consciousness during morning assembly.
She opened her eyes about two hours later, and the diagnosis was finished around lunchtime.
Sua, who hated classes, chose to go home, while Baek Cheol-yeon had to return to the academy.
After walking Sua home, Baek Cheol-yeon spoke.
"What about food?"
"I'll order something."
"Take care of your head. Don't let it get like before..."
Baek Cheol-yeon trailed off.
Sua laughed lightly and replied casually.
"I'll manage. Save your worries."
"...Fine. I'm going."
"Yeah."
And so Baek Cheol-yeon stepped completely out the front door.
Now Sua was home alone.
She sprawled onto the sofa and closed her eyes. She was tired without having done anything.
Then she suddenly recalled what Baek Cheol-yeon had said.
'What do you mean, take care of my head.'
As if that was something you could manage.
Sua had almost no memories from her childhood.
Her parents had passed away in a rift when she was eleven.
Sua had been at that rift site, and her memories from before and after were hazy.
She couldn't recall her parents' faces, nor the friends she'd played with before or after.
Before the incident, her parents had often left her at her aunt's house due to work, and after they passed away, she'd come to live there permanently.
'If memories are going to come back, I'd rather remember this life than a past life.'
What an ironic situation.
To show a past life to someone whose memories of this life were already hazy.
That said, she didn't think remembering her past life was a bad thing. She just thought the order was wrong.
'No death from overwork.'
Since she'd learned in advance how she might die.
'Ha, but how can you live without ever touching anyone?'
And on top of that, the S-rank Esper Ki Woo-sol was sitting right next to her.
Within arm's reach—one wrong move with her elbow and their skin could touch. She had to change seats by any means necessary.
'I'll go tomorrow and ask to change.'
But what excuse would she use?
"Hwawm."
As she racked her brain, drowsiness began to creep in.
The sofa was too cozy, and the spring sunlight pouring through the balcony made her even more languid.
And so she drifted off to sleep.
---
---
She'd fallen asleep around lunchtime, but she opened her eyes the next morning.
And from morning on, she received every possible kind of nagging.
A jackpot collaboration of scolding from her aunt and Baek Cheol-yeon, for the first time in a while.
The trigger was that she'd slept without eating lunch or dinner.
Baek Cheol-yeon, more studious than he looked, had been at the academy until late, and her aunt had come home late after working overtime.
When they came in, they'd carefully moved the already-asleep Sua to her bed.
And in the morning, as Sua groggily opened her eyes, Baek Cheol-yeon asked what she'd eaten for dinner.
'Dinner? I didn't eat.'
'Why?'
'Because I was sleeping.'
'Since when?'
'Right after you left?'
'...Are you kidding me?' — flashback
After that, it was revealed that she hadn't eaten lunch either.
They said it was strange that she'd slept without even taking off her uniform, and that she was someone who didn't even follow basic rules.
She received so much nagging that she couldn't even remember it all.
In the midst of this, her aunt's hand gripping the spatula as she served rice had extra strength in it, and twice the usual amount ended up in the bowl.
'If I skip two meals, she'll really kill me.'
Sua shook her head slightly and rubbed her bloated stomach.
Just then, Ahn Ji-hyun approached and spoke.
"Miss Bong-suk, you okay?"
"Yeah. No."
"What? Are you okay or not okay?"
Ahn Ji-hyun used her characteristic speech pattern and looped her arm around Sua's.
Sua left Ahn Ji-hyun clinging to her arm like a koala and used her remaining arm to hang her bag on the desk hook.
Then a question that had been on her mind suddenly came up.
"Hey, did you awaken?"
"Huh? No?"
"Then why is Teacher Kim Yi-ro-un our homeroom teacher?"
"That's... Ah. You weren't there at the end-of-year ceremony."
Ahn Ji-hyun's explanation followed.
The accident had happened about two months ago, in early February. Around the time spring break was starting.
And after this spring break ended, they'd have about two weeks of classes before the graduation ceremony.
It seemed that a great deal had been reorganized during this period up until the graduation ceremony.
"So basically, they mixed Awakened and non-Awakened in the same class?"
"Yep, yep."
"Why all of a sudden?"
Sua asked with a bewildered expression.
Of course, this was a hundred times better than being in a class with only Awakened students, but—
'How am I supposed to know who's Awakened and avoid them?'
There was this problem.
'Hoo... Still, at least Ahn Ji-hyun isn't Awakened, that's a relief.'
But she couldn't always stick with Ahn Ji-hyun.
While Sua was agonizing over her future daily life, Ahn Ji-hyun answered her question.
"I heard a parent of a non-Awakened student raised a fuss? Saying this was clearly discrimination too."
Oh, for goodness' sake. Discrimination—what's the big deal about that? Non-Awakened people, who are the first to reach out to Awakened when they need them, sure have all kinds of complaints.
Ahn Ji-hyun seemed to think the same, as she whispered quietly.
"It's all just sour grapes. So they mixed everyone this time. We even take Awakened training together."
"Whoa..."
So the situation she'd been worried about had come to pass.
Except it wasn't that Teacher Kim Yi-ro-un taught PE as well—rather, non-Awakened students were now taking Awakened training.
'Good thing I mentioned the accident.'
Her introduction, packed with the meaning "don't make me do anything tough." Sua felt relieved about the insurance she'd set up.
"But still, I like it. I guess that research about how Awakened people also have better looks isn't complete nonsense after all."
Ahn Ji-hyun ran her hand over Ki Woo-sol's desk in a somewhat creepy way, her face flushing.
'Oh my, so blind—only seeing that face.'
Just as Sua was shaking her head at the sight, the bell rang and homeroom teacher Kim Yi-ro-un walked in.
Teacher Kim Yi-ro-un immediately asked about Sua's well-being upon entering. His face was filled with concern.
"Sua, how are you? Is it okay for you to come to school right away?"
At that, Sua remembered the "Awakened training" she'd just heard about and, with somewhat exaggerated gestures, held her head as she spoke.
"My head hurts a bit... but I'm okay."
Acting frail, acting frail!
Kim Yi-ro-un, completely fooled by her acting, nodded with an even more worried expression and said.
"That's a relief then. But if anything else feels wrong, tell me right away. Don't collapse like yesterday."
"Yes... Ah, Teacher!"
After answering weakly, Sua urgently called out to Kim Yi-ro-un as a thought struck her like lightning.
Kim Yi-ro-un, who had been turning toward the podium, walked back toward Sua.
"C-could you change my seat?"
"...Seat?"
Kim Yi-ro-un's eyes widened in surprise.
Sua's face was instantly filled with dismay. She hadn't thought of an excuse. She'd blurted it out in a rush.
'Ah, what do I say? Say I don't like Ki Woo-sol? ...That's not convincing.'
There probably wasn't a student who would refuse to be Ki Woo-sol's deskmate.
Because the fact that he'd killed his father and been diagnosed as a psychopath was just unofficial information.
She judged that he had the kind of credentials anyone would want to be close to.
Friendly personality, idol-level visuals, S-rank Awakened.
Just looking at Ahn Ji-hyun a moment ago, she'd seemed quite envious of Sua.
"Why all of a sudden?"
"......"
Sua remained silent at Kim Yi-ro-un's question, her mind racing at tremendous speed.
The answer that came out was:
"I-I get motion sickness in the front seat. Ugh."
She even mimicked covering her mouth.
'Auntie, nice one.'
Her aunt had made her eat a huge breakfast, which made the acting even more realistic.
"Uuugh!!"
The teacher looked flustered and didn't know what to do, and Sua was impressed with her own acting skills.
At this rate, he'd have no choice but to change her seat!
'Should I have taken acting lessons?'
But there was something Sua had overlooked.
When you pretend to gag—
"Ugh?"
You might actually gag for real.
Her face turning pale, Sua shot up and headed straight for the bathroom.
